Making a read bloom: The Sir David Beckham Rose

David Austin Roses needed a very intimate tone for their social media launch of the Sir David Beckham Rose, commissioned as a gift by his daughter Harper Beckham for the King’s Foundation. We were going along ok until the director said something that just cracked it open for me. He asked me to speak as if I were a mother watching her daughter and her dad spending time outside together, from the window. Suddenly I saw my own daughters planting up flowers in the garden with their dad, and the emotion in the voice really arrived. I began watching the visuals as if I were there seeing it for myself for the first time, bringing a note of gentle surprise. Sometimes you just have to find a way to make a read feel like your own.
